According to reports, controversy lightning rod Rush Limbaugh is working with St. Louis Blues owner Dave Checketts to purchase the St. Louis Rams. Since the death of former owner Georgia Frontiere, her family has been looking to sell their majority share of the franchise, and it looks like a deal could be in place that would return Rush to the NFL, which is sure to be interesting.

Rush’s previous association with the NFL was controversial to say the least. As a (brief) commentator with ESPN, he said that Donovan McNabb got it easy from the media because they wanted a black QB to succeed. And then he got fired. Not because what he said was wrong (and it wasn’t, entirely), but because the NFL doesn’t like controversy it can avoid.

That said, regardless of his politics (and if you want to get picky, his prescription drug shenanigans), there’s nothing to suggest Rush wouldn’t be a good NFL owner. The problem he may face though is players who don’t share his political views and might not play for the team such as Bart Scott and Mattias Kiwanuka. Of course, offer the guy enough guaranteed money, and he’ll be say it’s great to have Elvar, Lord of the Ant People owning the team.

There will be a lot of noise and bluster, but odds are, in the end Limbaugh will be a good citizen owner. And really, it’s not like the Rams situation can get any worse.
